All about Citi® secured MasterCard

Instead than depending on an individual's credit history, First Progress Platinum secured cards are full-service credit cards that secure credit against a security deposit. They're a good choice for people with bad credit or who are just getting started with credit. These cards don't require a credit check when you apply, and approvals aren't based on a minimum credit score, so they're a great option for people who might otherwise be turned down after a credit check. Every month, all cards record activity to the three major credit agencies to assist in the establishment or restoration of credit history. There are three types of Platinum Secured Cards: Prestige, Select, and Elite, each with distinct interest rates and monthly fees. You can lower your monthly interest rate by choosing a higher monthly charge, which is handy if you don't expect to pay off the debt each month.

  • Establish credit use and payment record with limited or no credit history
  • No annual fee
  • Security deposit between $200 and $2,500 required
  • Standard variable APR of 22.49%

This needs your Attention!

  • Secured credit cards are useful for establishing credit when you don't have any or for mending a bad credit score. Remember to follow sensible credit practises with any credit card (including secured cards) that can help your credit score over time, such as paying your balance in whole and on time each month and spending only what you can afford to pay when your bill is due.
  • You should also stay away from any of the card's excessive fees. For example, if you pay late, you may be charged a fee of up to $40 and may be subject to a variable penalty APR of up to 29.99 percent (compared to the already high 22.49 percent regular variable APR).
  • If you're concerned that you'll forget about your payment deadlines, Citi offers free account alerts that notify you when you make a purchase, reach your credit limit, or need to make a payment.
  • Read all the reviews online before thinking about applying, it really helps with the decision making

Advantages:

  • Available to individuals with little or no credit history
